PWHO Honored at the PWSA-WI & IL Conference: Special Tricks on Treating Prader-Willi Syndrome

By Jackie Mallow

On October 15th PWSA-WI & PWSA-IL joined forces to offer families and professionals the opportunity to hear from various experts on approaches and strategies to supporting individuals diagnosed with PWS. Dr. Linda Gourash, the invited speaker, once again motivated and educated the participants throughout the day with her knowledge and outgoing personality. It also helped that she was able to add a little light humor through her gift of song. Gus Ludwig, Occupational Therapist, had the crowd on it’s feet and actively participating in a group sensory integration activity that had us all smiling, and I am sure like myself others are still humming the song and doing the actions. Barb Dorn, RN, and Peggy Burns, RD, brought to light many issues surrounding the need to ensure a healthy life style through a balanced nutritional diet plan. A panel of experts closed the day by opening the floor to allow the participants to ask their individual questions and expand further on earlier topics. The conference set the stage for learning in a background of fall festivities and all the attendees received a treat bag full of behavioral and nutritional ideas, the Food Behavior & Beyond DVD and the "Red, Yellow & Green" System for Weight Management.  Who could have asked for anything more?

To us at PWHO, we received the best treat ever--to be recognized from PWSA-WI for all our years of dedication and support to the association, their events, and membership.  We received a plaque for PWHO, and individual plaques for each of our homes. It is truly wonderful to know that our “Homes with a Heart” are touching others.
