 2009 Special Olympics Basketball Season
By: Coach Jennifer Groth

The 2009 Special Olympic Basketball season was exciting for all the individuals from PWHO who participated.

On March 14th, the three PWHO Special Olympic Basketball teams traveled to Wilmot, Wisconsin for the District tournament. The three PWHO teams, the Warriors, the Gladiators, and the Knights had trained hard and were determined to do well at the District competition. The district competition consists of two rounds, where a win in the first round qualifies you for the second round, also known as the Championship round. The Warriors, coached by Seth Bezanson and the Gladiators, coached by Kathy Cosby were in the same division. Both the Warriors and Gladiators won their first games, thereby forcing them to meet up in the Championship round. The Warriors played well but were unable to beat the tough Gladiators, who took first place in their division. The Knights who were in a separate division narrowly won both of their games to take first place in their division.

Due to their taking first place at the District competition the Gladiators and the Knights spent the next three weeks honing their skills so they would be ready for the State Competition in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. On April 3rd, the Gladiators and the Knights travelled to Oshkosh, looking to repeat their successes. The Gladiators took on both the Eau Claire Mustangs and the Platteville Fireballs; they fought hard against both teams but were defeated. They took fourth place in their division but left with smiles on their faces due to doing the best that they could. The Knights took on the Waupaca Comets and defeated them sending them to the Championship round. In the Championship round the Knights battled against the Chippewa Hawks but were defeated. The Knights took home second place.
